Hytale is a sandbox role-playing game (RPG) that combines the creative freedom of world-building with the deep immersion of an adventure game.
While Hytale is a block-based game, it goes beyond simple construction by adding procedural generation, a narrative-driven world, and creator tools.
The developers at Hypixel Studios previously ran the world’s largest Minecraft server network. Due to technical limitations within the Minecraft engines, they decided to build their own standalone title, Hytale, to better support their visions.
Their years of experience managing millions of players enable them to create a game that offers a unique gameplay experience beyond traditional sandbox, which revolves around several key components:
Following its official early access launch on January 13, 2026, Hytale is in a “true” early state – unpolished and actively developing. The team used a legacy engine build, so you’ll expect bugs and unfinished systems in this launch.
If you prefer a flawless experience, it is best to wait for the 1.0 release. But if you jump in now, you can help shape the game via the early Exploration and Creative modes.
Hytale gameplay focuses on player agency, so you can choose between being a warrior, a builder, or a creator.
Unlike traditional sandbox games that leave you with no clear direction, Hytale offers a structured “Adventure mode” filled with quests and combat.
The game world is built using procedural worlds, creating diverse biomes like frozen tundras and underground jungles. Within these areas, you will encounter:

The in-game scripting system is another appealing aspect of Hytale. Hypixel Studios is providing the same tools they use to build the game directly to the players. This means you can change the behavior of in-game content, like creating an NPC variation, without installing a mod.
For instance, you can use the Hytale Model Maker to adjust a creature’s texture or animation and observe the results instantly without restarting the game.
Additionally, the visual scripting system enables you to modify NPC behaviors or environmental rules, such as changing weather colors or gravity, through an accessible, node-based interface.
Hytale offers more built-in depth and narrative structure than Minecraft, which remains a more “pure” blank-canvas experience. While both are block-building games, Hytale targets players who want a modded experience out of the box without the hassle of manual installations. See the table below for a closer look at the comparison of both sandbox games:
| Features | Hytale | Minecraft |
| Graphics | Advanced lighting, detailed models, and falling tree physics that collapse realistically | Iconic, low-poly, pixelated aesthetic with floating blocks |
| Modding | Server-side only. All assets and scripts load automatically when you join a server | Client-side. Mainly reliant on third-party loaders like Forge or Fabric and manual installs |
| Combat | Tactical RPG style with stamina, multi-weapon combos, and dodges | Simplified “hit and retreat” mechanics with standard cooldowns |
| NPCs | Intelligent factions with social behaviors, social classes (sentries/chieftains), and lore | Basic villagers with simple trading mechanics |
| World design | Structured Zones with tiered progression and scripted dungeons | Open-ended biomes that blend into each other with no forced progression path |
| Progression | Gear-gated economy requiring specific tools, such as a blacksmith anvil tier 3 | Flexible, non-linear progression where goals (like the Ender Dragon) are optional |
| Engine | Custom C# engine explicitly built for high-performance voxels and live editing | Java-based (Original) or C++ (Bedrock), often requiring performance mods like Sodium |
Hytale gameplay modes are split into three main pillars: adventure, creative, and competitive. These modes ensure that whether you want to survive a harsh world or build a masterpiece, there is a dedicated space for you.
Following the early access launch on January 13, 2026, players can immediately jump into Exploration and Creative modes.
Here are the Hytale content examples you’ll encounter:
This is the primary way to experience the story of Orbis. While the full narrative-driven Adventure mode is still being polished during early access, the current Exploration mode allows you to discover the world’s foundation.

Drawing on their experience with the Hypixel server, the developers are creating a dedicated competitive environment.

This mode is essentially a professional-grade creation workspace. It removes all gameplay restrictions, granting you flight, infinite resources, and advanced terraforming tools.

Hytale development is led by Hypixel Studios, a team that evolved from running one of the world’s most successful Minecraft servers into a professional game studio.
Founded by Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette in 2013, the Hypixel Network initially served as a showcase for their Minecraft adventure maps. It quickly grew into a phenomenon, consistently hosting over 150,000 concurrent players and holding multiple Guinness World Records.
The motivation for Hytale stemmed from Mojang’s EULA changes, which resulted in an 85% revenue drop for the Hypixel server. This was a reality check for the team, reminding them that they didn’t control their own destiny.
In October 2018, Hypixel Studios was established to create independent games, receiving initial support from Riot Games before being fully acquired in April 2020.
Under Riot ownership, the project underwent ambitious changes, including a complete engine rewrite to C++ in 2022 for better performance and multi-platform support. However, after years of scope changes and development challenges, Riot canceled the project on June 23, 2025.
The community’s #SaveHytale movement convinced original founder Simon Collins-Laflamme to act. On November 17, 2025, he reacquired the IP with a 10-year personal funding commitment, rehired 30 developers, and made a crucial decision: revert to the stable legacy engine (the original C#/Java build from the 2018 trailer) to launch faster.
Just eight weeks later, on January 13, 2026, Hytale entered early access as a fully independent, community-first project.
The current Hytale engine combines multiple development technologies:
The studio recruited veteran performance experts, including JellySquid (creator of Minecraft’s Sodium and Lithium optimization mods), to ensure the game runs smoothly.
Hypixel Studios has embraced radical transparency through early access, working alongside players to iterate on core systems. Key features include:
To play Hytale, you’ll need to purchase one of three editions: Standard ($19.99), Supporter ($34.99), or Cursebreaker ($69.99).

All three editions grant full access to the game and let you reserve your username, while the higher tiers include extra cosmetic items and exclusive sets that don’t affect gameplay.
Before purchasing the game, check our guide on Hytale’s server requirements to ensure your setup is ready for smooth gameplay.
For multiplayer and always-online worlds, you have two main hosting options:
➡️ Not sure where to host your server? Explore our list of the best Hytale hosting providers, where we break down the specs, features, and pricing.
Both hosting options let you tailor the experience to your needs – it’s only a matter of whether you prioritize simplicity or hands-on control. With Hostinger’s Game Panel, the self-hosting route is more accessible, as we provide a ready-to-install Hytale server template.
