Resource Requirements and Startup Time

OpenSearch is a resource-intensive application due to its Java-based architecture and in-memory operations for fast search performance. While OpenSearch can technically run on minimal hardware, this template is configured with 1 GB Java heap size suitable for development and small production workloads on VPS with 4 GB RAM. For small-scale production deployments (up to 10 GB of indexed data), we recommend at least 4 GB RAM. For medium-scale workloads (up to 100 GB of indexed data), we recommend 8 GB RAM with a 4 GB heap. Large-scale production deployments should have 16 GB or more RAM, with the heap sized at 50% of the available memory, up to a maximum of 32 GB. The initial startup takes 2-5 minutes as OpenSearch initializes its indices and gets ready to accept requests. OpenSearch Dashboards might show connection errors during this initialization period, which is quite normal. Do plan for adequate disk space as OpenSearch stores indexed data in the persistent volume, with the actual disk usage depending on your data volume and index settings.

Security Considerations
